Here is a look back at some of the topics we’ve covered in the NewsBreaks section of Conformity during the past decade:

FCC Adopts Rules Promoting Cable Service Competition
“The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has established new rules
that it says will promote increased competition for cable and broadband
Internet service. In an action in late 2006, the Commission adopted a
Report and Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that will
prohibit local cable franchising authorities from engaging in
activities that erect unreasonable barriers to potential new entrants.”

FCC Frees Wireless Firms from Auction Bids
“The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has released wireless
telecommunications providers from more than $16 billion in debt
obligations incurred during the Commission’s mishandled efforts to
reauction portions of the wireless spectrum. Citing “serious economic
difficulties” in the wireless industry, the Commission voted in
November to free Verizon Wireless and other carriers from their
obligation to pay for wireless spectrum licenses originally held by
NextWave Telecom but reauctioned by the Commission in January 2001.”

FDA Will Not Handle CE Mark Evaluations
“Claiming internal resource limitations, the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) is reportedly planning to outsource activities
related to the implementation of a domestic CE Mark assessment program.
A CE Mark assessment program was one of the outcomes of the Mutual
Recognition Agreement (MRA) covering medical devices signed by the
United States and the European Union (EU) in 1997. The program will
allow U.S.‑based manufacturers to have local conformity assessment
bodies (CABs) evaluate their products for compliance with EU
requirements, apply the CE Mark, and sell their products in the EU
without further testing.”
